Genographic Project*

National Geographic web site - National Geographic and IBM's Genographic Project Atlas of the Human Journey explores early human migration routes and describes the highlights along that journey.  Allows direct access to the Time Line Eras, Journey Highlights, and Genetic Markers or Haplogroups that interest you most. Go there to learn more about ancient human migration through detailed text, photographs, maps, time lines, videos, and more.  Oct, 2008: I have learned that these folks base all their output on 12 markers - It seems that 12 markers is all it takes to place a person into an ancestry group determined to have a specific geographic beginning.

Geographic News* News from the National Geographic.

Glossary of DNA Terms A fairly good assembly of DNA terms

Haplogroup Matches Contains a chart showing some of my Haplogroup matches (y-DNA), and where the mutation level of those matches are found.  The higher the mutation level the more remote the relationship.  This page also contains a description of some Haplogroups.

Migration Maps for all Y-DNA Trails and Tribulations of Mankind.  Historic migration maps and trace info

Migration Maps my Y-DNA Migration maps and trace info for my Y-DNA.   I have only the European Haplogroups mapped at this time.  New map added 10/2/2007

Migration Maps my mtDNA An mtDNA journey showing my mothers mtDNA of J2 and the "J" track is mapped.  Includes comments from the book Seven Daughters of Eve.

Tracing a mothers mtDNA gets lost quickly in history because mtDNA does not follow a sir-name bloodline.  The mtDNA is passed to all immediate children of a specific mother.  That means half sisters and half brothers of the same mother will carry the mothers mtDNA.

Regards the tracing factor, a son cannot pass his mothers DNA, whereas a daughter does.  Your mtDNA can be traced back 100,000 years - or to be realistic, can be traced back as far as there is other DNA to test against.

Lost female cousins can indeed find each other IF they each test their mtDNA and that data is available in comparing databases.  If a match is made there may be a table to approximate the date of a common ancestor.  Female cousins may be 10 generations apart, but that mtDNA will be a huge flag saying here I am cousin.

However and there is always a "however", unless there is a paper trail back 10 generations, you may not be able to identify all the grandmothers in the line.

mtDNA Results for Ed The mitochondrial Haplogroup J contains several sub-lineages. The original Haplogroup J originated in the Near East approximately 50,000 years ago.  The Haplogroup J2 is particularly interesting because it has been detected in Turkey, Italy, Sardinia, Iberia, and Iceland.

mtDNA Results for Rene The mitochondrial Haplogroup H contains several sub-lineages. The original Haplogroup H originated in the western Europe approximately 30,000 years ago.

Niall (of the nine hostages) In 2006, a group of researchers explored the frequency of haplogroup R1b and the Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype (WAMH) in Ireland. They showed that haplogroup R1b accounts for 85.4% of the lineages in Ireland, but that a distinctive Haplotype is found there at a frequency of 8.2 to 21.5%. The authors attribute this Y-chromosome signature to Niall of the Nine Hostages, a medieval warlord.

Oghgul Project* This project is best for mtDNA testing because it is not restricted to a specific family Surname.

Ogle Project* Sign up, help us finally discover our Ogle Ancestors, restricted to the Ogle bloodline.

OOFA's Ogle Family DNA Project Sign up, help us finally discover our Ogle Ancestors.

Project Pricing advantage FTDNA provides a discount for purchasing through a Project as opposed to buying direct from FTDNA.
Please select from the Ogle or the Oghgul project for your discount.

RAO (MRCA) for Ed

RAO (MRCA) for Rene
The results here show the recent ancestral origin of those you match or nearly match in the RAO. The ancestral origin information is provided by each testee, and is only as accurate as the testee's knowledge. The testee is instructed to answer "Unknown Origin" when their ancestor's origin is uncertain or not known.
(Most recient common ancestor (MRCA)

Soothe Your Worries* A while ago a customer sent FTDNA a copy of the reply she received from someone that she was trying to bring into her family project.  It had so many misconceptions that we thought: "we need to publicize this and respond one by one to that person's claims".  Click on "Soothe your worries" at left to read the facts.

y-DNA Haplogroups Here I have attempted to cross-reference the different labs codes - It is as accurate as I can make it - any help would be appreciated.
